My Journey: From Payroll Manager to Beauty Trainer

I'm Jodie, the owner and accredited trainer behind JB Lash Academy.

Before entering the beauty industry, I worked as a payroll manager. Following difficulties with nerve entrapment, I found myself reconsidering my career and exploring a completely different direction.

Moving into beauty wasn't just about learning a new skill. It was about creating something that gave me the opportunity to build a business, develop professionally and have greater flexibility around my family.

Today, I run a growing beauty salon with a team of six while also training students who want to begin their own beauty careers.

I understand how daunting a career change can feel, particularly when you're starting from scratch.

That's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about providing supportive, practical beauty training.

I want our students to leave feeling that they've gained more than just a certificate.

Which Beauty Treatments Should You Learn First?

One of the biggest questions beginners ask us is which beauty qualification they should start with.

The answer really depends on your interests and what you'd eventually like your business to look like.

Lash Extensions

If you enjoy detailed, creative work and love the idea of transforming someone's appearance, lash extensions could be a great starting point.

Our Fast Track Lash Extension Course introduces beginners to Classic and Volume techniques, giving students the foundations to create a variety of lash styles, including Hybrid sets.

Lash Lifting

Lash lifting is an excellent addition to your treatment menu, particularly if you want to offer treatments that enhance natural lashes.

Our training covers both Traditional and Korean Lash Lifting techniques.

Brow Treatments

Brows are another popular starting point.

From Brow Lamination and Threading to Halal Brows and Hybrid Tinting, learning multiple brow techniques can help you offer personalised treatments to different clients.

Facials and Body Treatments

If skincare is your passion, Basic Facials and Dermaplaning could be worth exploring.

Alternatively, Body Waxing and Spray Tanning can help you develop a more varied treatment menu.

There's no single correct route into the industry. The important thing is choosing training that aligns with your interests and long-term goals.

Why Practical Training Matters

Watching tutorials online can make beauty treatments look relatively straightforward.

However, there's a significant difference between watching someone perform a treatment and learning to perform it safely and confidently yourself.

That's why practical experience is central to our training at JB Lash Academy.

Our students work with live models under professional supervision, allowing them to practise their techniques, ask questions and receive individual feedback.

We keep our training groups small, with a maximum of two students per trainer, so everyone receives personalised attention.

Learning in a supportive environment can make an enormous difference when you're trying something for the first time.

What Happens After You've Qualified?

One thing I always explain to our students is that gaining your qualification is the beginning of your journey, not the end.

Becoming confident takes time, practice and experience.

You'll need to consider professional insurance, suitable products and equipment, your treatment pricing and how you'll attract your first clients.

You may also need to practise on additional models before offering treatments independently.

At JB Lash Academy, we understand how important this stage is.

That's why we provide ongoing WhatsApp support, opportunities for shadow days and lifetime access to online learning materials.

We encourage our students to share their work with us so we can provide feedback as their skills develop.
